Since 1930, Olvera Street vendors have been selling items commonly found throughout Mexico, including crafts, artwork, leather goods, souvenirs and food. Strolling Mariachi bands and street performers also add to the festive environment. Several restaurants and food carts for sit-down or casual dining make it a delightful place to visit and there are tours of the historical buildings, including the Avila Adobe, built in 1818 and considered to be the oldest building still standing in Los Angeles. A number of special events are held throughout the year.

Westwood Village is a quaint but bustling area just north of Wilshire Boulevard and east of the 405 freeway and Veterans Cemetery. Attracting college students from UCLA which borders the village at the north, Westwood Village contains hundreds of businesses, medical offices, shops and restaurants, as well as the largest concentration of first-run movie theaters in the world. Westwood is most famous for its Hollywood premieres which take place at some of the grandest old-fashioned movie palaces that still exist. The Armand Hammer museum and several hotels are included in the area and UCLA is an easy walk from any part of the village. The Federal Building at 11000 Wilshire Boulevard, which includes many important services such as the passport office, is just across the street.
