This 1.5-acre office complex is in the heart of downtown Los Angeles and includes two skyscrapers, the Inter-Continental Hotel and the Museum of Contemporary Art. It is the largest mixed-use project in downtown and is located between Grand Avenue and Olive Street, north of 4th Street and south of 2nd Street. The plaza also houses hotels, restaurants and office buildings.
The phenomenal courtyard fountains and outdoor common areas host a number of special events throughout the year including Grand Performance Events, the largest offering of free performing arts in Southern California. All of the concerts are free to the public and no tickets are necessary.

Surrounded by Little Tokyo in downtown Los Angeles, The Geffen Contemporary was originally built in 1982 by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry, who transformed a warehouse into a temporary space for large, flexible, multi-media projects. The space was originally to be used while the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) was being built one mile away. This “Temporary Contemporary,” now known as the Geffen Contemporary, was such a huge hit with the public that it continues to be utilized as a permanent museum, housing some of MOCA’s collection as well as special exhibitions. Admission is free with same-day MOCA admission.

Originally built in 1926 and completely restored in 1993 after a devastating fire, the Central Library is the third-largest library in the nation with access to over two million books and periodicals organized in eleven subject departments. There are regular tours of the remarkable, Egyptian-style building which features murals and figures representing California’s history in the hallways and rotunda. The Central Library is the headquarters of a massive hub of local, neighborhood library branches. Weekend events include lectures, exhibits and special exhibits.

Miles Memorial Playhouse
On the grounds of Reed Park Lincoln Blvd. and Wilshire Blvd. Santa Monica
Built in 1929 in what is now Reed Park, the Miles Memorial Playhouse is a City of Santa Monica Landmark and is included in the State Historic Resources Inventory. Administered by the City of Santa Monica Community and Cultural Services, the playhouse is dedicated for use by children. There are art, dance and theater classes as well as performances. Two groups that use the playhouse regularly are the Virginia Avenue Project and the American Academy of Dance and Kindred Arts. Upcoming events are published in the Santa Monica Seascape Newspaper. A work of art in itself, the red sandstone MOCA building was designed by internationally known Japanese architect Arata Isozaki. The MOCA collection houses art from 1940 to the present and boasts some of the most famous modern artworks in the world. There is an adjacent sister museum, the Geffen Contemporary, just a mile away and a same day admission is valid at both locations. There is also an imaginative café in the courtyard, called Patinette at MOCA. The museum offers many special events, outdoor concerts and traveling exhibitions throughout the year.

Also known as the Performing Arts Center of Los Angeles County, the Music Center is home to the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Opera and the Center Theater Group. Theaters include the grand Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, the Mark Taper Forum, a theater-in-the-round, and the Ahmanson, a mid-size musical theater at the north end of the complex. The soon-to-be-built Disney Concert Hall will be the newest theater at the center. Programs run year-round, and the property is surrounded by architectural public courtyards and fountains, as well as premiere downtown restaurants.

Just at the southern end of the Santa Monica Civic Center, at the corner of Main Street and Pico Boulevard, and bordered by 4th Street on the west, is the public Civic Auditorium, an outstanding 3,000-seat concert hall, trade show auditorium, community events center and the site of the Academy Awards Show during the 1960’s. The Civic Auditorium is home of the Santa Monica Orchestra which performs during the fall and spring.
