For every trip you take, you reduce the amount of money you spend on auto-related expenses. So get on board and:

  • Spend less on gasoline.
  • Spend less on parking fees (for meters, monthly passes and valets).
  • Make fewer costly trips to your mechanic.
  • Calculate what your own savings would be by visiting publictransportation.org.

Fueled by vision.

Big Blue Bus proudly leads regional efforts on sustainable public transportation, with its nationally recognized commitment to reducing its environmental footprint. Here are some recent milestones on our path toward creating a more sustainable future on transit:

2014

  • Became the first transit agency in Southern California to purchase buses with near-zero compressed natural gas (CNG) engines.

2015

  • Became one of the country's first municipal transit agencies to convert its entire fleet to renewable natural gas (RNG), using non-fracked, methane gas harvested from landfills.

2016

  • Committed to achieving a 100 percent electric, zero carbon fleet by 2030.
  • Awarded $870,000 from the Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee's (MSRC) Near-Zero Engine Incentive Program, for the partial funding 58 near-zero CNG emissions engines, to be installed at a rate of 12-18 buses per year, over a 3-4 year period.
  • Received the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) Silver Status award for Sustainability.

2017

  • Reduced nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by 37%, through purchasing and retrofitting a combined 37 vehicles with near-zero emission engines.
  • Reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 62%, since the implementation of renewable natural gas (RNG) in 2015.

Today

  • Big Blue Bus is committed to further reducing its emissions by purchasing and adding near-zero CNG bus engines, and implementation of a bus replacement plan for an all-electric fleet by 2030.

Keeping it real... green.

Our commitment to sustainability reaches far beyond our bus fleet. Big Blue Bus’ maintenance facility uses green technologies and systems to create a healthy work environment for our employees and the Earth. These efforts include:

  • Installing solar panels.
  • Topping the building with a reflective ‘cool roof’.
  • Using recycled building materials to reduce waste sent to landfills.
  • Cleaning and refining oil for reuse, saving over 19,000 barrels of crude oil from having to be pumped.
  • Recycling tires by grinding them up for street repavement.
  • Recycling 85% of the water used in our bus wash facility.

Ride and breathe easier.

By riding the Big Blue Bus, you’re helping to keep the air cleaner. Here’s why:

  • Our buses have specialized exhaust systems that filter and remove particulates.
  • Riding the bus also reduces harmful carbon dioxide emissions that contribute to global warming.
  • By leaving your car behind, you can reduce your individual carbon emissions by 20 pounds a day or 4,800 pounds a year.
  • Our entire fleet exceeds all California Air Resources Board emission-lowering regulations.

Be good to the planet.

So be good to the planet and your bank account by catching a ride on the Big Blue Bus.

Because when you ride blue, you save green.
